Police in Mt. Moroto Region have asked the boda –boda riders within Karamoja to cooperate with them by giving necessary information regarding the wrong elements in the community.
This was sounded by the Regional Police Commander of Mt. Moroto region Francis Chemusto during the meeting with boda-boda riders of Moroto Municipality held at the Regional headquarters in on the 7/6/2023.
The meeting was held to create awareness to the boda boda riders following the incident which happened in Amudat district where John Akasule, a Boda boda rider was attacked by Nelson Omara, 26 along Amudat-Nakapiripirit road.
According to Chemusto, 50% of the criminal acts in the region have connections with boda bodas especially those riding during night hours.
He noted that boda boda riders carry criminals from villages to towns, ferry stolen items and also supply food to the warriors who are hiding in the bushes.
He added that most of the boda boda riders have lost their lives in the hands of the warriors who always ambush them during night hours.
ASP Patrick Lachen Ofika the Regional Traffic Officer Mt. Moroto called upon boda boda riders to avoid riding under the influence of alcohol.
According to him most of the accidents which occur on the roads are caused by speeding and driving or riding while drunk.
He also cautioned boda boda riders over moving longer distances especially with people who are new in the community.
However, Simon Peter Otim the chairman boda boda association Moroto Municipality who spoke on the behalf of the boda boda riders said the major challenge they are currently facing in the region is insecurity especially during night hours.
He asked the security team to always respond quickly whenever they are informed of any attack.
On the issue of them carrying stolen items and carrying warriors from villages to town, he admitted it saying in most cases they do it not knowing that they are stolen items or suspected armed criminals.
Since the year begun, the Amudat – Nakapiripirit road incident of attack on the boda boda riders was the first of it’s kind to be reported.
However in the past years, the region had recorded similar cases of motorcycle theft which left a boda boda rider dead after being hacked by a purported passenger in Napak district(along Matany -Apeitolim road).
Suspected Karimojong warriors also shot dead a boda boda rider in Napak district in June 2022, 3km away from the President’s state lodge in Napak.
