The Pallisa district local government on Wednesday afternoon launched a 130 million road works of the one billion sent from central government at Kameke sub county on Omare swamp that has not been motorable for the last 15 years.

While addressing the community that was excited for government’s answering their prayer, Fredrick Byekwaso the Pallisa chief administrative officer asked the people to corporate with the technical team during the opening of the road and allow drainage channels to be dug to let water away from damaging the road.

Byekwaso tasked the local leaders of Kameke Sub County, especially Omuroka Parish, to stop rice growers who are most likely going to block flow of water.

“Pallisa received one billion from central government, and we are injecting shs.130million in this 5.2km road, but we have other ten bad roads to upgrade” Byekwaso said.

Majidu Dhikusoka the Pallisa resident district commissioner who presided over the launched ordered for immediate stoping of any farming activities in the wetlands and challenged the parish chief to be answerable as much sensitization had been done since 2022.

“The improvement of roads falls under the second pillar of PDM that is why president Museveni in his wisdom instructed all districts to be given one billion, what I need here is value for money and causing connectivity of people to the market and also access other social services” he said.

Majidu added: “I call upon PDM beneficiaries to double their enterprises and let poverty be history”.

Vincent Epoketom, the LC3 chairperson of Kameke Sub County said that opening of Omuroka -Omare road has relieved all politicians as the community has been crying for the last fifteen years and district kept saying the finances couldn’t allow.

“I now ask my people that when the road works are finished, let us not use it for dubious activities like theft but as a tool government has given as to fight poverty in our households”, Epoketom said.

Marylin Alupo the Pallisa district vice chairperson said what affects the durability of the community access roads is the blockages of watery channels by the people cultivating along the road forcing water to erode it.

“You people of Kameke are lucky to have your road here given priority, so take full charge as Byekwaso the CAO has pleaded to you”, Alupo said.

Micheal Ongwara the district Engineer said the work is going to start right away for not more than one month.

However, the community wants the road to proceed up to Orikosio wetlands, which connects them to Mukongoro in Kumi district by boats.

Salume Amoding a resident of Omuroka village said the bridge which got washed many years ago without any attention caused over 20 terrible accidents especially to strangers at night.

“To try to safeguard people, logs were put across, but others mistook them for illegal roadblocks meant for theft”, Amoding said.
