The vice president of Uganda Her Excellence Jessica Alupo Epel has pledged to support the Gogonyo county farmers with 10,000 hand hoes worth 100 million.

Alupo made the commitment during the launch of the Gogonyo county farmers SACCO at Adal primary school in Kaukura Sub County, Gogonyo County, Pallisa district which she presided over as the guest of honour under the invitation of Derrick Orone the Gogonyo county Member of Parliament.

The vice president who handed over four walking tractors which from the Ministry of agriculture, animal industry and fisheries for supporting Orone who asked her for help said agriculture needed to be commercialized rather than maintaining the traditional pleasantry method of subsistence farming which was meant for merely food for the stomach.

Alupo before handing over the tractors and launching the distribution of 2,000 hoes Orone bought, addressed the gathering telling people to embrace the well selected programs meant to improve livelihood such as emyooga, Parish Development Model-PDM, UWEP, youth livelihood, UPE and USE.

People should work hard to produce more so that they get income to better their lives. Government invested over 470 billion in the tarnacking of Tirinyi to Kumi via Pallisa and Pallisa to Kamonkoli but there no goods being transported via these nice roads. On education I want to ask RDC to stop the vice of having parents levied any form of money in government aided schools because government has taken it upon itself to provide everything“, Alupo said.

She tasked the cultural, religious and local leaders to ensure all children are at school and urged people to be so patriotic.

MP Orone thanked the vice president for rescuing him with the 10,000 hoes that will be given to all farmers at household level.

I have here 119 villages and all this people need hoes. I wanted to lobby for four tractors through the office of the vice president but people have spoken themselves saying they want hoes“, Orone said.

Orone told Alupo that he has been struggling with other SACCOs like Gogonyo County Women Cooperative Society which he supported with 350 million. The MPs who graced the launch included Patrick Aeko of Soroti, David Ochwa of Agule and Kevin Kaala and the Pallisa district civil servants led by Magidu Dhikusoka the Pallisa district RDC.

Dhikusoka requested the Vice President to have the humps constructed on the busy centers to quell the rampant road crushes that are claiming lives.

We have tried to address the issue to ministry of works and UNRA in writing but response is negative. I pray when you get involved they’ll come to put the humps“, Dhikusoka said.

However, Oscar Papakonyang said people preferred hand hoes to tractors because they couldn’t benefit as they don’t have gardens that need tractors.

On his side, Sam Okello a resident of Apopong said it should be made a government program for all people to get hoes even if it’s once every two years.
