MOROTO: FRIDAY, JULY 22, 2022
The Karamoja regional police spokesman, Mike Longole, has refuted media reports that some relief food rations that were meant to benefit over 100 people in Moroto district had been stolen.
“This is to inform the general public that, Police in Karamoja has not registered any case of theft of food supplied by the Government of Uganda to Vulnerable People,” he said.
Longole clarified that what was raised was suspicion by some vigilant community members on 16 bags of food which was offloaded in Camp Swahili Juu, in South Division, Moroto Municipality on July 20, 2022 which was meant for nearby villages.
He said the relief food was kept in the home of Sophia Nakoroi, a resident of the upper Camp Swahili village in a room that was not gazette for keeping public relief food.
Since then, police took responsibility of ensuring that the food in question was safely kept until July, 21, 2022 when it was distributed to the beneficiaries.
The food is part of the shipment sent to curb the ongoing starvation in Karamoja sub-region consisting of the districts of Kotido, Moroto, Napak, Kaabong, Nabilatuk, Amudat, Karenga, Nakapiripirit and Abim districts.
The police publicist encouraged the locals to continue being vigilant and report any suspicious action during the relief food distribution to the nearest police station.
“As police, we would like to thank the community members who reported this matter for helping security and leaders in ensuring food supplied reaches and benefits only the vulnerable people” Longole concluded.
