MOROTO: WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 10, 2022
There is a sigh of relief in the Northeastern district of Moroto where prices of fresh foods has significantly dropped in the wake of the first rain season’s harvests.
These are the essential food stuff such as onions, tomatoes, vegetables, cabbages, egg plant and maize among others.
Fresh food retailers say due to increased supply, they have reduced prices by almost half that tomatoes that they used to sell at sh1,000 now sells at sh500 same as eggplants while greens like spinach and amaranthus is sold at as low as sh200.
In Moroto main market, medium sized cabbages are sold at sh3,000 down from sh5,000 when the commodity was scarce and roasted maize is at sh500 as opposed to sh1,000 a month ago.
Evelyn Akello, one of the vendors of fresh foods, said that the food supply has been boosted by good harvests from both the Singila village based Moroto prisons and the 3rd Division army barracks that are supplying the town with the kitchen garden products and maize respectively.
These gardens are owned by individuals in the forces i.e. the prison warders and the Uganda peoples’ defense forces soldiers.
