A section of Members of Parliament across the nine (9) districts of Karamoja sub region have asked the government to listen to them, especially top officials in the Ministry for Karamoja affairs.

Speaking during a meeting organized and chaired by the Prime Minister,  Robina Nabbanja, at hotel Africana Moroto, John Bosco Ngoya, the Member of Parliament of Bokora County claimed that top leaders in government were paying a deaf ear to the problems affecting the people of Karamoja.

Using the example of hunger situation, Ngoya said they raised the matter to the Ministers and to the Prime minister but it was ignored by the very Ministers in Karamoja.

“The ministers told us that its true people are dying in Karamoja, but it’s not only hunger killing them. Some are dying of Alcohol while others are dying of other diseases,” Ngoya revealed.

He charged that the government only remembers Karamoja during elections and thereafter kicks them off.

However, Mary Goretti Kitutu, the minister for Karamoja affairs, insisted that the situation in Karamoja has improved in terms of general security and food security following the deployment of security personal in the region, the harvest of some crops by farmers and some interventions of food donations by both the government and development partners.

Meanwhile the Prime Minister, Robina Nabbanja, who was chairing the meeting said government is aware of all the issues affecting Karamoja and they will be handled soon.

Nabbanja said that government has always treated Karamoja in special way, referencing the recent distribution of 16 galla goats to every reformed warrior, allocation of Shs135 billion to fight hunger in the region and the heavy deployment of security personal in the region to fight the worriers that are terrorizing the community.

Nabbanja added that the government through the leadership of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni loves the people of Karamoja and they will continue to give special attention to the region.

She also asked the people of Karamoja to embrace the PDM program since it’s meant to elevate Ugandans out of poverty.
