Exactly one month since the Uganda National Bureau of Standards and the Ministry of trade banned the production and sale of the City 5, a local gin attributed to the death of 17 of its consumers, the police have impounded 74 more cartons of the killer waragi from a suburb of Arua City.
“Today, Wednesday September 21, 2022, the territorial police of Arua City together with Flying Squad Unit attached to West Nile Region conducted Intelligence led operation that led to the recovery of 74 cartons of City 5 [gin],” Police Spokesperson for West Nile, Josephine Angucia revealed.
She said the operation followed a tip off by a concerned citizen who blew the whistle to the police that City 5 Gin is still being kept and consumed secretly despite the recent incidences of deaths and communication to stop its consumption and sell.
Police went into the operation at around 11:00am at Oluodri trading cetre, Manibe area in Ayivu East Division, leading to the recovery of cartons containing a total of 1,776 bottles of the contraband.
One unidentified person was reportedly arrested in the operation and the cartons of the substandard gin kept as exhibits as inquiries continue.
“We thank those who shared timely information leading to the success of the operation, and we appeal to members of public to continue sharing information on people who are still secretly selling and consuming the deadly waragi so that a similar operation is conducted to eliminate it out of the community,” Angucia said
She warned the general public to desist from dealing in City5 gin in anyway or else they will be arrested and prosecuted according to the law.
