The training focusing on gender sensitive reporting of sexual and reproductive health rights (SRHR) brought together 20 journalists, media personalities and social media influencers from Arua City and Terego district.
“Usually after such trainings, things that you had been taking for granted begin to appear serious. I hope you are going to have gender sensitive reporting of SRHR,” said Caroline Paparu, the program manager for the mentoring and empowerment program for young women (MEMPRO).
Makerere University Lecturer, Dr David Mpiima Mugabe, took the journalists through three days of training covering sexual and reproductive health.
Also covered was the national policy on SRH and the related laws, RSHR reporting, protection of minors and survivors of sexual and gender-based violence and audience targeting.
Mugabe implored the journalists to be sensitive while reporting SRHR, saying that it encompasses sexual relationships, child bearing and births and deals with intimate private relationships.
The training for the journalists and media personalities was meant to enable them to play a key role in the implementation of the “We-Lead Project” that is being implemented by MEMPRO and the SRHR Alliance in the districts of Arua and Terego.
MEMPRO is a national human rights and feminist organization that started operation in 2008.
The organization empowers adolescent girls and young women aged 14-29 years to expand their aspirations, strengthen their voices and exercise more choices.
Officials explained that the “We-Lead project” aims to strengthen the influence and position of young women’s sexual and reproductive health rights, especially in areas affected by displacement.
