The Residents of Nursery cell, Nakatunya Sub County in Soroti City have raised complaints over the rampant garbage dumping in the community.
This was happened Monday 17th October 2022 morning at Nakatunya main market where members were raising their complaints to the market authority responsible for wastes management in the area.
Speaking to Janet Igeru the chairperson market venders in Nakatunya main market, there is nothing that shows the city council has the Vans for collecting rubbish because they don’t do their work in time yet people pay taxes every day.
Igeru said the garbage has then resulted to pollution of the environment hence affecting the restaurant women in the main market.
In 2010-15 according to reports, Soroti at large was ranked as the cleanest districts in the Teso sub-region due to attention from the leaders and identified apparently as a black sport of garbage.
However Lebi Ogwadule the LC1 Nursery cell in Nakatunya said this has been persistent since the time it was municipal council responsible for wastes management up to now when it’s the city council.
The chairman said the government would get a good site for garbage since people just dump rubbish illegally in the area and hence bringing a lot of complications and discomfort to the surrounding community.
“Meanwhile even if we were seeking for the attention from government, we the people of Nakatunya and Soroti at large should listen and stop dumping rubbish any how” Ogwadule argued
The locals then requested all arms of government to help them in any possible means to rescue the situation.
oroti City produces on average, 60 tons of garbage daily and about ten tons are collected each by the city authority if the dumping trucks are all working and in good shape.
In may this year, Soroti City Council finalized plans to hire a private firm to manage garbage collection in the new market and also around the city. The plan to hire a private firm was mooted last year following futile attempts to keep the market and the city clean.
According to the document shared by Isaac Asaku, the secretary for works back then, the private garbage collecting firm would charge each household in the city 5,000 to 10,000 Shillings every month. Those living in “bungalows” and senior quarters would pay between 20,000 to 30,000 Shillings, Hostels, factories, tertiary and university institutions, hospitals, banks and other financial institutions would pay between 100,000 to 300,000 Shillings every month while other businesses pay between 30,000 to 100,000 Shillings effective June this year with the aim of ensuring that the City maintains hygiene.
