Leaders of Moroto municipality and Moroto district have called upon the people of Moroto to wisely use the Municipal Public library which has been brought back to existence by MTN after donating computers.
Speaking during the commissioning of the library at the municipal headquarters, Muhammad Ismail the mayor of Moroto Municipality says the municipality has been having challenges in accessing internet which made their work hard.
According to him, the coming of MTN in Karamoja region has greatly
developed Karamoja in different aspects like communication, business, education, health and security due to easy communication among the people.
The mayor added that with the presence of the computers now in the library, this is going to improve the performance of learners who will have access to free computer services and knowledge during holidays.
Richard Eyaru the town clerk of Moroto thanked MTN foundation for bringing in computers to the municipal library saying this is going to help the business community who have been spending a lot of money for generating Tin numbers from cafes.
He also asked people to use the computers to develop solutions for their problems and to market their products rather than using the computers for abusing others.
Meanwhile Ekomoloit Onapito Etesot the representative of the MTN foundation said that the foundation zeroed to bringing computers to Karamoja to bring about technological advancement to the region.
To him, Technology has changed and developed the world and if this is adopted in Karamoja, it will help to change the region. He also challenged the public to own the library by taking good care of all the equipment in the library since it’s for their own benefit.
According to Mr. Bryan Mbasa, the Senior Manager of MTN Uganda Foundation, public libraries play an important role in the development of the community and therefore equipping them with computer Labs is crucial for people’s access to information in the country’s norther region.
He added that MTN Uganda believes that everyone deserves a modern connected life which the computer lab resonates well with its aspirations and that public access computers are becoming increasingly popular as more people understand the need for internet access, benefiting both learners and researchers.
ABOUT THE LIBRARY
Built in 1965, Moroto Public Library located along Independence Avenue contains books ranging from philosophy to social sciences and Arts. With the face lift it received from MTN Uganda Foundation, the facility now has news computers, a 24-hour power back up and internet connectivity courtesy of MTN Digital Access Program.
Over the years, MTN Uganda Foundation has supported 42 ICT labs including six in technical institutes including St. Daniel Comboni Polytechic in Moroto district in partnership with the Belgian Development Agency, Enabel.
