Federation of small and medium enterprises (FSME) in coordination with the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) held a 4 days digital training for vendors in Moroto district operating small and medium size businesses in a bid to enhance their digital marketing skills.
The training that was held at the Moroto Central market came to a climax on Thursday 29th July 2023 with the certificate awards ceremony and over 400 vendors in Moroto benefiting.
Richard Tumwesigye the Project manager FSME said the training was developed after the COVID-19 effects on the business community where most of the customers resorted to the use of online platforms in transacting their businesses.
He says the world is changing the trend of operation of businesses and thus empowering the small and medium enterprises with such skills would help boost their chances in the competing market.
Tumwesigye highlighted that during the training, they faced some challenges mostly with the majority of the communities lacking digital devices like smart phones, computers among others that would facilitate the smooth training and implementation of the attained skills.
He however noted that the business community later embraced the training after realising the different benefits that comes with thus the high turn up in numbers for the training.
Salim Wambede the chairperson market vendors appreciated the development however worries about the implementations as majority of the vendors do not own gadgets that would enable them to practice the acquired skills.
He added that as the market administrators they will encourage the vendors to acquire gadgets that support digitalization with now the market fees collection already digitalized and people are paying for stalls through a digitalized system.
Ismail Muhammed the Moroto Municipality Mayor was thankful to UCC and FSME for considering Moroto vendors in their digitalization training adding that this is the start of boosting the marketing strategy in the district.
He however consented to the fact that most of the vendors currently do not have the gadgets for implementation of the skills attained but believes with the skills individuals will purchase devices.
He called for more refresher trainings to be held in order to keep updating the minds of the vendors who attained this particular training.
Nathan Paul Eliko the District Internal Security Officer welcomed the digitalization exercise but warned that as the vendors acquire devices such as smart phones and start operating online they should take precautions as many fraudsters are there and can easily scam the people.
