As Karamoja sub region gears up the fight against Malnutrition which is caused by not eating enough food to maintain proper body function, or eating an imbalanced diet that does not provide the body with the nutrients needed to maintain a healthy growth, Rotary E- club has partnered with Moroto Regional Referral Hospital to plant over 1000 fruit trees within the facility to help in boosting up the health of those seeking medical services, staffs and visitors from the facility and Karamoja at large.

Speaking during the planting of trees on Saturday, Dr. Stephen Pande the hospital director said Karamoja as sub region has a higher rate of malnutrition currently standing at 11.3% as compared to other regions within the country.

Ronald Mulindwa the Assistant Governor Rotary E-club asked the people of Moroto to own the trees by taking good care of those being planted since they are meant to benefit the population of Karamoja.

According to Tuko trees play a very important role in the community if well handled. He also called upon the stakeholders of the entire Karamoja to sensitize the communities on the importance of trees in their various communities as way of encouraging them to plant and stop cutting them for charcoal.

Overall, the nutrition situation in Karamoja shows an estimated 112,270 cases of children aged 6-59 months and 8,980 pregnant or breastfeeding women (PBW) across the Karamoja region are expected to suffer from acute malnutrition and will need treatment between March 2024 and February 2025.

Rotary E- Club also intends to plant 200 trees within Moroto Municipality as way of beautifying the municipality and to encourage the population of the area to adopt tree planting as a means of mitigating the growing climate change effects.
